In 2004 SAE Brasil (Society of Automotive Engineers) introduced a new universitary competition category that has big notority in other countries, the Formula SAE - that started in the 70's in USA.In this event the graduation students must build a formula type vehicle that attends to specific regulations from SAE International.

The competition aims to impove the technical knowledge of the participators, as well as encourage team work, raise funds and planning and analysing costs through simulation of development of a new product. It's an engineering challenge that's not limited to track performance - instead it emphasizes the development and results as a whole process. The vehicle goes through static and dynamic tests such as: design, manufacturing, costs, acceleration and endurance.

The 2 best teams have a chance to participate the annual American Competition.

Safety inspection

Determines if the vehicle and drivers can compete in the dynamic tests. The judges analyse if the participating team is following the rules or not.
There is no punctuation in this test.

Costs and Manufacturing

An analysis of all project costs and their manufacturing process is performed through a report prepared by each team on the expenses in the car. The cheapest projects and that fit better in the concept of lean manufacturing are privileged.


The team presents the project to the where the innovations of the project, as solutions to problems, adjustments and validations are discussed.


The participants develop a business case which explains why the vehicle is best suited for the market's demand and is economically viable for large scale production.


It is a dynamic proof that evaluates the acceleration of each prototype in a straight line. Vehicles must travel a 75m track from zero speed.
The shortest time wins.


A circle or eight-shaped circuit, varying according to the competition, in which the dynamics in the curve, grip and ability of the riders are tested.
Also rewarding the shortest time.


A complete circuit of approximatelly 1/2 mile that tests dynamics and maneuvrability.


A 22km test that takes the vehicles to the limit, testing performance, reliability and resistance.

Fuel efficiency

During endurance the fuel consumption is measured.
The car that uses less fuel receives points.
